Legend has it that in the 17th century, Queen Mia who born and grew up in Duong Lam village, an imperial concubine of King Trinh Trang, Built the Mia pagoda and taught Duong Lam people how to plant sugar cane (called Mía in Vietnamese) and make candy. With sweet taste of sugar cane, local created and developed many kind of candy.

Ingredients to make candy are very simple, candies are often made from malt, sugar and peanuts, but the difficulty lies in feats of who makes it. Making candy requires workers must be in

good health to make the cover of the candy. Because after cooking, malt becomes very thick and hard to stir. The malt need to have a certain elasticity, can not be too hard or too soft to have good quality candies. After that the malt is laminate to become thin, the peanuts are spread and the last step is roll the malt to cut in to the roll shape.


Under the help of JICA Company, the products from Duong Lam ancient village are meet the demand of the market in both quality and cover. The candy from Duong Lam village is become a specialty of Vietnam that be exported to Japan – a very difficult market. The cover of the candy from Duong Lam village is also very specific with the image of Duong Lam village gate. Peanut candy is not only meaningful with Vietnamese people; remind them about their hometown, but also a very special gift for the foreigner tourist.
